How NutrientOS calculates what it shows you
NutrientOS shows several derived signals — Food Grade, satiety, estimated glycemic impact — alongside the raw numbers. This page explains exactly what each one is computed from, what it cannot see, and why none of them is a medical result.
What NutrientOS calculates
- Energy and macronutrients Calories, protein, carbohydrate, fat, fibre, and sugar, summed from the records you log at the portions you specify.
- Micronutrients Vitamins and minerals carried by those same records, totalled per day and compared to reference targets.
- Food Grade A quality score and label per food, computed from its nutrition data and an inferred processing classification.
- Satiety A five-level estimate of expected fullness, computed from the food's own nutrition values.
- Estimated glycemic impact An estimated glycemic index and glycemic load per food, from carbohydrate, fibre, sugar, protein, and fat, plus a small reference table for common foods.
- Targets and trends Calorie and macro targets from your goal, measurements, and activity, and weight and measurement trends over time.
What NutrientOS does not calculate
- Your actual blood glucose response. Nothing in the app measures glucose.
- Nutrient absorption or bioavailability. It reports what you ate, not what you absorbed.
- Cooking losses. Values reflect the food as described in its source record.
- Nutrient status in your body. Intake is not the same as status, and only testing establishes status.
- Any clinical or diagnostic measure. There is no screening, no risk score, and no diagnosis anywhere in the app.
How missing nutrient data is presented
This is the single most consequential decision in the app, so it is stated plainly: a nutrient with no measured value is displayed as unknown, never as zero.
The distinction is not cosmetic. Branded and restaurant records usually carry only the nutrients a label requires. If those absences were summed as zeroes, a week of ordinary eating would report near-total micronutrient failure — a conclusion produced entirely by the database, not by the food. NutrientOS therefore excludes unmeasured values from totals and shows how much of a day is backed by real measurements, so you can tell a thin dataset from a thin diet.
Food Grade: purpose and limitations
Food Grade compresses a food's nutrition into one readable signal — a score plus Good choice, Fair choice, or Review often — using protein and fibre relative to calories, added sugar, sodium, energy density, and a processing classification inferred from the record's data and description.
Its purpose is comparison at the point of decision, particularly between two similar products. Its limitations follow directly from being a compression: it grades a food in isolation rather than a diet in context, it cannot reward nutrient density that the record never measured, its processing classification is inferred rather than audited, and it has no knowledge of your allergies, medications, conditions, culture, or preferences. It is a prompt to look closer, not a verdict.
Satiety: purpose and limitations
The satiety estimate predicts how filling a food is likely to be, from protein and fibre relative to calories, energy density, sugar, whether the item is a drink, and processing level. Its purpose is to make the same calorie budget go further, which is usually a more useful lever than eating less.
It is a population-level generalisation applied to one person, which is where such generalisations are weakest. Appetite responds to sleep, stress, training load, medication, hormonal cycles, illness, meal timing, eating speed, and habit — none of which are inputs. Familiarity and enjoyment routinely beat the nutritional prediction. Treat it as a hypothesis to test against your own experience.
Estimated glycemic impact: purpose and limitations
NutrientOS estimates a glycemic index and glycemic load per food and labels the result Low, Moderate, or High, marking whether the value came from a small reference table of common foods or was estimated from macronutrient composition.
Its purpose is rough comparison between carbohydrate sources at a given portion. Its limitations are substantial and worth stating clearly: published glycemic index values vary widely between studies and between individuals eating the same food; ripeness, processing, cooking method, cooling, and what else is on the plate all shift the real response; and a mixed meal behaves differently from any of its parts measured alone. Nothing here measures your blood glucose. If your glucose response matters clinically, that requires actual measurement and a clinician.
These signals are informational, not medical
Food Grade, satiety, estimated glycemic impact, micronutrient totals, biometric trends, and recovery context are all informational. None of them is a diagnosis, a screening result, a clinical measurement, or dietary advice, and none has been validated as predicting a health outcome.
